Lauki is a summer vegetable though now it is available almost the year. Lauki crop generally wither down around 15th Dec as cold starts impacting but being a hardy vine, it can stay alive for 15 to 30 days from there. Any fruits formed before 15th Dec will stop maturing but will remain harvestable and edible till the vine dies down.
Now that happens if the Lauki vine was being grown in open field. It is possible to build some protection for the vine so that cold western winds don’t impact much, sun warms the vine whenever it comes out and cover on vine doesn’t allow pala (frost) to kill its leaves. Low tunnels with polythene sheets or a proper polyhouse can help.
But this lauki isn’t same a summer lauki. Weather has an impact on its inside which will get darker very soon, or may be dark or brownish. Cold impact can also be visible in patches sometimes. Best solution is off course to source Lauki from where weather is still right for growing like Maharashtra/ Karnataka or even further down. Till we figure that out, please bear with us.
