Ayurveda says that food must be consumed based on the individual’s constitution and also based on the prevailing environment and seasons.
In the monsoon season, our metabolism slows down and digestion gets weak. We are also more prone to infections in this season (cold, viral fevers). Below are some tips to eat healthy in monsoons.
1. Consuming heavy or fermented foods is not recommended during the monsoons since there is already a tendency in this season for more fermentation in our gut leading to undigested food and acidity .
2. Include slightly sour, salty and naturally sweet tastes and [SS1] watery food in our diet. Moderate consumption of amla, ginger, haldi and lemon can help improve sluggish digestion. Have small piece of ginger and rock salt or jaggery before meals to improve the digestive fire (agni).
3. Reduce or avoid intake of raw food and salads. Prioritize having freshly cooked and warm meals.
4. Avoid or limit the intake of tea and coffee as they can dehydrate the body and cause indigestion. Give preference to herbal teas (ginger, cumin and coriander) that can enhance one’s digestion. (Remove this point as info is in the table)
5. Although it’s important to stay hydrated, it is necessary to balance one’s intake of fluids as excessive consumption can dampen the digestive capacity which is already weaker than usual in this season.
6. We also suggest consuming seasonal vegetables such as gourds (e.g. bottle gourd, ridge gourd, sponge gourd, ash gourd), drumstick, ladyfinger, pumpkin, garlic and going easy on vegetables such as potatoes and leafy greens.
7. Moong dal is light to digest and is best for this season. Thin moong dal soup is especially beneficial.
